Very large painterly drawing titled, 'So?', MFA Show 1997; inspired by a photograph of the famous artist, Willem deKooning.
So?, 1997.
oil sticks, charcoal
& collage on paper.
(h × w) 72 × 50 inches.

This portrait was one of the first drawings created for my Master of Fine Arts Show in the spring of 1997. It is one of the largest in scale, and reflects the spontaneous and intuitive, yet purposeful and confident manner that it was created in. Formally, it has the common characteristics and traits that are visible throughout the series of images that made up the exhibition. It is a figurative portrait, with combinations of stylized features and flat surface or pattern areas combined with realism and representational areas. The juxtaposition of realism with the gestural, and the cartoon-like, graphic areas adds to the depth of the portrait and heightens the drama of the scene.
